In Dehua in China's Fujian, the Dehua white porcelain is known for its creamy whiteness, subtle jade-like radiance, paper-thin delicacy, and clear, chime stone-like sound.
The Dehua kiln sites have been inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Dehua porcelain firing techniques are among the first to be included in China's national list of intangible cultural heritage.
The porcelain has impressed two scholars from Italy, who visited Dehua recently.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MASSIMO ANDREOLI, Italian scholar
"I'm very happy. I'm very proud because I discovered the porcelain of Dehua. And like Marco Polo seven centuries ago, I come from Venice now. And Marco Polo describes this porcelain in his book as something that is really precious, that is really elegant, and I see the museum and I confirm. But I go forward than Marco Polo because I do my vase for myself. It's a really special experience that I suggest everybody come here in Dehua and try."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): GUICCIARDO SASSOLI DE'BIANCHI, Italian scholar
"It is very interesting. The technical, the ceramic here that you have because it's in some ways, it is also similar to something that we have produced in Europe, in parallel in the 15th century or 14th century. Especially the Ming (Dynasty) ones, it reminds me (of) the ones from Faenza. In Italy, Faenza is a place where the ceramics is very good. But here was of course the class one level for ceramics. As we all know, Europe always loves ceramics. So it was very impressive to see all this collection and how it developed here during the century."
