British pensioner, 73, injured in electric tricycle crash in Thailand
A British pensioner was seriously injured in a horror electric tricycle trash in Pattaya, Thailand.
Garry Leonard Turner, 73, was left bleeding heavily in front of the To Te Market in the Thai 'Sin City' after crashing into a pile of wooden pallets obstructing the road, early morning on November 21.
Shocked passers-by called the Pattaya City Police Station upon seeing the Brit splayed out on the pavement in a pool of blood at 1:30 am local time.
Cops and medics arrived at the scene, where the injured expat was lying next to the pallets and broken glass shards scattered across the road. They gave him first aid and rushed him to the Pattaya Hospital for urgent treatment. His tricycle sustained only minor damage.
A police spokesman said: 'The pallets were improperly placed. They were jutting from the sidewalk out onto the road. The victim crashed likely because he failed to notice them.'
Officials said they were checking CCTV footage in the area to find who had placed the pallets to face legal action.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
