A Britsh pensioner was injured after he stumbled into an unlit construction hole in Thailand.

John Anthony Hart, 76, wandered into the pit which had ''poor lighting'' in Pattaya on the country's east coat on March 12.

Locals heard John's shouts for help and he was carried out. He suffered a head wound and cuts and grazes on his body.

The retiree said the signs around the road works were unclear.

He said: "I fell down because it had no lights or other warnings. I didn't notice it was there and walked straight in.''

John was given first aid at the scene before being taken to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene said that John was not seriously injured. They said that they would recommend police and council officials make those responsible for the road works to add lighting to the area.
