A freediver spotted what she thought was a deadly sea snake and quickly swam away for life.

Roxy Piocos was exploring the sea floor with a friend recording a video of her when they saw the marine creature in Batangas, the Philippines on November 16.

Footage shows the startled swimmer Roxy gliding away when AD Dionisio pointed at the animal.

They moved away and returned to the surface afterwards but realised it was only a ribbon eel.

AD said: 'My eyesight was so bad. I pointed at it to warn Roxy for safety but it turned out to be a ribbon eel. It was not dangerous but better be safe than sorry.'

Ribbon eels are known for their striking appearance with elongated, ribbon-like body. They may resemble sea snakes at first glance due to their long, slender bodies.
