Cosplayer's dress catches fire in botched lantern launch
A cosplayer's dress caught fire as she tried and failed to launch a lantern during a festival in Thailand.
Japanese costume artist Keeko dressed to the nines in a Rapunzel outfit for the spectacular Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai on November 21.
But while she made a wish and waited for her paper lamp to soar to the heavens, a spark flew off and landed next to her shimmering silver gown.
Footage shows the flicker engulfing another lantern beside Keeko, which spreads onto her long Disney Tangled frock.
Keeko was fixated on her lantern but felt the heat, so she pulled away, shaking her dress to put out the blaze.
She said: 'I went there as Rapunzel. I was almost burned while trying to make my lantern fly into the sky.'
Organisers roaming the area for fire accidents quickly sprayed retardant on the blaze. No one was hurt, and Keeko flew her lantern more carefully on her second try.
The Yi Peng Festival is a traditional festival celebrated primarily in northern Thailand, particularly in Chiang Mai. It usually coincides with the Loy Krathong Festival, the festival of lights, which takes place in November.
Participants release lanterns into the night sky as an offering to Buddha, which symbolises letting go of bad luck, making wishes, and inviting good fortune.
Disney's Tangled is a 2010 animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is a modern retelling of the classic fairy tale Rapunzel from the Brothers Grimm, with a whimsical and humorous twist.
