Storm or no storm the groceries must get through as there is no other access to Towan Island. Believed to be Britain's only privately owned wholly domestic suspension bridge, reaching precariously to a house on a shrinking sea stack, Sometimes crawling across is the safest option. Access is solely via the private 90-feet high suspension bridge, built-in 1910. The island was first sold in 1838 to the Billing brothers, who kept chickens and grew potatoes there. The island was accessed by a path cut into the rock. The island's house was built in 1910 and has been owned by many notable people, including Sir Oliver Lodge, the inventor of the spark plug.
one owner conducted seances and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is believed to have attended. Workmen and delivery people have to grin and heave as nothing arrives without being carried by hand. It is soon possible to rent the Island home for holidays, a week, peak season in 2025 is nearly £6,000 a week. A head for heights and deep pockets are required for a unique stay.
