STORYLINE:
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, stressed on Monday the importance of supporting Syria and respecting its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The ministers spoke on the phone about the need to support Syria's reconstruction efforts through enhanced coordination between regional and international actors, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
The two ministers also reviewed the latest developments in Syria, with Jordan's Safadi briefing Egypt's Abdelatty on the outcomes of his visit to Syria earlier in the day.
On Monday, Safadi held talks in Syria's capital of Damascus with Ahmed al-Sharaa, head of the country's de facto governing group. The two men focused on Syria's political transition and on broader regional security concerns.
A militant alliance led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group waged a major military operation out of northern Syria on Nov. 27. Sweeping southwards, the group captured Damascus and overthrew former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government within 12 days.
