Cargo ship capsizes sending containers toppling into water
An overloaded ship capsized and spilled dozens of containers into the sea in Turkey.
Bungling port workers had overloaded the vessel with 24ft long metal containers while it was docked at the Ambarlı Mardaa Port in Istanbul on December 23.
CCTV captured the ship titling onto its side as the boxes filled with goods plunged into the water.
Fifteen crew were rescued from the scene and one was injured. Officials said that of those, five swam to the shore and rescue teams saved 10.
Turkey's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure said that floating barriers were placed around the vessel to mitigate the risk of marine pollution.
The Maritime Directorate added that salvage operations were coordinated by the port authority.
They added: 'Investigation into the incident is ongoing, and efforts continue to stabilise the vessel.'
The Amnah, built in 1996, had departed from Derince Port in Izmit Bay, west of Istanbul, before arriving at the port. The vessel is 331ft long (101m) and 59ft (18m) wide.
