Surrey, United Kingdom - December 27, 2024 Train services between Guildford and Effingham Junction resumed this morning (Friday, December 27) after Network Rail engineers completed critical emergency work to stabilize a shifting embankment in Clandon. The line had been closed since December 21 after ground sensors detected movement, prompting immediate action. Over six days, engineers installed 50 steel sheet piles, each 8 meters long, to prevent further slippage. Additional soil nail reinforcements are set to be installed while trains continue running under a 20 mph speed restriction. Network Rail’s Tom McNamee thanked passengers for their patience, acknowledging the disruption and praising the engineers who worked through the festive period. “Safety remains our top priority,” McNamee stated, while also apologizing to nearby residents affected by the noise. The reopening is part of a wider effort during the Christmas and Boxing Day closures, with significant works completed across the Wessex route. Key projects included track maintenance at London Waterloo, cabling upgrades in Southampton, and rail replacements on the Windsor Lines. SWR reminded passengers that additional engineering work continues near Brookwood until January 5, urging customers to check travel schedules.
