Update
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all responders and dispatchers for their outstanding work this morning in managing a chaotic situation.
As many of you know, a working fire was reported at 7:48 a.m. this morning at a nursing home located in Mount Carmel Township.
Upon arrival, responding units found the premises filled with smoke from floor to ceiling, severely limiting visibility. Before the arrival of the first apparatus, several responders entered the building and began evacuating the nursing home residents.
A second and third alarm were sounded, and a mass casualty box alert was issued to bring in additional resources.
Emergency medical services from five counties were on-site to provide assistance with patient care and transportation.
Through a collaborative effort by multiple counties of first responders, the fire was successfully extinguished and contained, while patients received care and assessment.
In total, 20 patients were transported from the scene, including 12 residents, 3 staff members, and 5 responders (comprising of police officers and firefighters).
The state police fire marshal is currently investigating the fire, and the cause has yet to be determined.
7:39 hrs. The Mount Carmel nursing center contacted the Northumberland County Communications Center to report a working fire with confirmed entrapment with temperatures having around 20 F.
A level 1 MCI was declare bringing units from 5 counties while placing local hospitals on standby due to the number of victims.
While the fire was knocked down within an hour confusion was noted while trying to obtain the correct number of residence after the Fire Department rescued more than the number provided.
