The Palisades Fire burned a hillside in front of news crews in Los Angeles, California.

Dramatic footage shows journalists with the horrifying blaze as their backdrop near Edgewater Towers at Sunset and Pacific Coast Highway on January 8.

Officials declared a state of emergency as the flames from the wildfire were fanned by strong winds and tore through more than 1,200 acres in just a few hours, causing more than 30,000 evacuations in the upmarket Pacific Palisades neighbourhood on Tuesday.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said that more than 13,000 buildings and 10,000 homes are at risk in the upmarket neighbourhood.

Cal Fire reported that the blaze had grown to over 19,000 acres by Thursday, with zero containment.

Two deaths were confirmed from the Palisades Fire, and dozens of residents who refused to evacuate were reportedly injured.

The fire has destroyed more than 5,300 structures, making it the most destructive wildfire ever recorded in Los Angeles County.

LA County Sheriff Robert Luna said that around 500 sheriff deputies have been deployed to assist with evacuations, traffic control, and looting prevention.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he visited the canyon to see 'firsthand the impact of these swirling winds and the embers'. He said he found 'not a few but many structures already destroyed'.

President Trump had previously before the election blamed state officials in California for mismanaging irrigation and water supply, which has caused dry conditions ripe for wildfires to spread.

He reiterated the criticism this week, slamming Governor Newsom for 'refusing to sign the water restoration declaration' in order to protect a 'worthless fish'.

The Palisades Fire is one of several active wildfires ravaging the region.

The Eaton Fire has burned 13,609 acres, causing at least five deaths. The Hurst Fire has scorched more than 855 acres since Tuesday night and is currently 10 percent contained. The Lidia Fire, which started Wednesday afternoon, has consumed 348 acres and is 40 percent contained.

The Woodley Fire and Sunset Fire have reportedly been contained, with evacuation orders lifted.
