A temple stampede left six worshippers dead and 40 injured in India.

More than 4,000 devotees were in line to receive special darshan tokens in Bairagi Pattida Park during the 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam season when a worshipper reportedly fell ill, triggering a stampede at the Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh on January 8.

Mallika, one of the worshippers, had to be rushed to the hospital, prompting organisers to open the gates, causing the crowd to surge forward.

Footage shows ambulances transporting victims and some administering first aid.

Bhanu Prakash Reddy, a board member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), expressed deep regret over the incident and promised a thorough investigation and appropriate action.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has convened a meeting of senior officials to address the situation and is scheduled to visit the temple today to assess the aftermath of the tragedy.

The Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam, a 10-day festival at the Tirumala temple in India, marks the opening of the Vaikunta Dwaram, believed to be the gateway to Lord Vishnu's divine realm. Celebrated during Vaikunta Ekadasi, this sacred event is cherished by devotees who believe that crossing the gate purifies their sins and grants them spiritual blessings.
