US: Fast-moving California fires force more residents to flee
Los Angeles, United States - January 11, 2025 Storyline: More residents have been forced to abandon their homes following evacuation orders as fast-moving flames continued to engulf the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles on Saturday, with firefighters rushing in to contain fires. Since erupting on Tuesday, six wildfires have been burning across Los Angeles County, with the Palisades fire being one of the largest. The death toll from the Los Angeles area wildfires rose to 24, the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner announced on Sunday. On Sunday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the increase of an additional 1,000 National Guard personnel to Los Angeles for response efforts, raising the total to approximately 2,500. The National Guard blocked the roads for safety, while residents who previously fled were forced to wait for hours to see what was left of their homes. A reporter for China Global Television Network (CGTN) was on the front lines of the Palisades fire in Los Angeles, an area that has recently been placed under evacuation orders. According to his reporting, fire crews have been dispersed across various locations to combat the blaze and enforce evacuation. Firefighters are also taking all possible measures to extinguish the burning fires before they reach residential quarters from hilltop. Burning nearly 10,000 hectares, the Palisades fire alone has destroyed more than 5,000 structures. As of Sunday only 11 percent of the fire was contained as windy conditions persist. SOUNDBITE (English) Lydia, local resident (full name not given): "I need to see my house. We've lived there for 30 years. Everything of ours is gone. We lost everything. But they have to let us in, because there's no fire down there now and I want to see my house." 4. Various of fires; 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Ediz Tiyansan, reporter, China Global Television Network (CGTN): "I'm following a fire crew over here. The firefighters are knocking on every door to make sure this place is evacuated and you can probably also hear in the air, the aircraft support has also arrived, dropping water and fire retardant on those hills that are still on fire." 6. Various of fires, firefighters, aircraft dropping water; 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Rick Carhart, public information officer, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (starting with shot 6/partially overlaid with shot 8/ending with shot 9): "They're working around the houses to make sure that the area is cleared around them, so fire doesn't get down to the house that it has the best chance of saving. There have been fixed-wing aircraft dropping retardant. There's retardant all over the ground and right now we have type-one helicopters that can drop a large amount of water in an area, so they're just really hammering this hillside behind me."
