Chinese Teen Breaks Guinness World Record for Gear Cube Solving
On December 27th in Chengdu, Sichuan, Leng Yichen, a high school junior from the International Department of Chengdu Foreign Languages School, achieved an astonishing feat in the cubing world. With a record-breaking time of just 1.241 seconds, he shattered the Guinness World Record for the "Fastest Time to Solve a Gear Cube."
The announcement was officially confirmed by Guinness World Records on January 10th, 2025, securing Leng's place in history and sparking excitement among Rubik's Cube enthusiasts worldwide.
The Gear Cube presents unique challenges compared to traditional 3x3 cubes. Its fixed corner structure and 180° turn mechanics demand exceptional skill, precision, and speed to solve.
Leng's journey with Rubik’s Cubes began during his primary school years in Pakistan, where he discovered his passion for the intellectual challenge of cubing. Despite a two-and-a-half-year hiatus due to academic demands, Leng reignited his passion in high school, delving into advanced and irregular cube types like the Gear Cube.
Supported by his school, teachers, and parents, Leng developed over 40 new solving algorithms for the Gear Cube, combining exploration and practice to refine his technique.
Breaking the world record is just the beginning for Leng. He plans to further innovate in the field of irregular cube solving by creating a dedicated website featuring solutions and simulators for various advanced cube types. He also dreams of organizing the world's first irregular cube competition to share the joy and transformative power of cubing with others.
Leng's remarkable achievement is a testament to his dedication and creativity, inspiring a new generation of cubing enthusiasts to push the limits of possibility.
