Sderot, Israel - January 19, 2025 Storyline: Beit Hanoun, a town in the northern Gaza Strip bordering Israel, has seen no signs of conflict since the ceasefire agreement took effect on Sunday. The area was a frequent target for the Israeli military, enduring daily airstrikes and artillery bombardments. A China Media Group (CMG) reporter on ground on Sunday evening reported no sounds of gunfire or explosions was heard since the ceasefire took effect. The first phase of the ceasefire will last six weeks, during which 33 of Israel's remaining 98 hostages will be released in return for almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The ceasefire was delayed by nearly three hours after Hamas missed an 8:30 deadline to submit the names of the first three hostages to be released later in the day. Hamas cited technical reasons for the delay and later provided the list. At 11:15 local time on Sunday, the Israeli military ordered its units in Gaza to cease fire, marking the start of the truce brokered after about a year of mediation by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. As part of the first phase, three Israeli women held in Gaza were released on Sunday. They were then transported to Sheba Medical Center outside Tel Aviv. During the three hours of delay, Israeli tanks and warplanes continued to bombard Gaza until the final moments. The Israeli military claimed its strikes targeted militants, while Gaza's health authorities reported at least 14 deaths and 25 injuries in the last day of fighting. Black plumes of smoke rose over northern Gaza as airstrikes continued. In another development, Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' armed wing, announced on Sunday that they and all Palestinian resistance groups will abide by the ceasefire agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several senior officials said that Israel is committed to securing the release of all Israeli captives and intends to fulfill its military objectives. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza, the death toll from Israeli airstrikes since October 2023 has reached 46,913, with another 110,750 injured.
