United States - January 23, 2025 The watercolours of Afro-Peruvian artist Pancho Fierro, known for vividly depicting 19th century Creole Lima during Peru's first independence, are now on display at the Hispanic Society of New York. The collection, the largest in the world, shows the multiracial complexity of a society rarely represented in the art of the period. Fierro's paintings depict mainly street scenes, featuring humble professions such as washerwomen, bakers and street vendors, as well as festive events such as dances, cockfights and carnivals. The event, organised in collaboration with the Peruvian Consulate in New York, featured live Creole music and a tasting of Peruvian cuisine, such as causa, ceviche and pisco sour, to celebrate the country's rich cultural heritage.
