Washington, United States - January 29, 2025 Chaos unfolded near Ronald Reagan National Airport on January 29 as a passenger jet collided midair with a helicopter while approaching for landing. Around 8:50 PM, Abadi Ismail, a Washington DC-area resident, captured video footage of the aftermath from his Buzzard Point home overlooking the Potomac River. Ismail described hearing two explosive sounds, which he likened to bomb blasts, followed by smoke rising south of the airport. His videos, now circulating, show emergency teams — including helicopters, boats, and firefighters — rushing to the scene. The FAA confirmed that a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, operating as American Airlines Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter. Although there have been no immediate reports of casualties, all takeoffs and landings at the airport were suspended. Ismail also noted the cold 39°F temperature of the Potomac River as search and rescue teams scoured the waters for potential victims. The NTSB has taken the lead in investigating the incident, while American Airlines has promised to release more details as they become available.
