A rainbow-coloured umbrella was sent soaring into the sky from an uplift of wind on a hot day.

Footage shows the parasol being blown 60ft above ground above a market in Central Java, Indonesia on January 19.

It flew around for more than a minute causing cheers among vendors and shoppers before drifting down.

The umbrella fell onto the roof of a home on the other side of the street and slid down the slope.

Onlooker Yudi Sih Nogroho who owns one of the street food stalls said: 'There was a sudden strong wind and we saw the umbrella flying above us.

'You would not miss it because it was colourful. It just flew away. I do not know who the owner was.'

If there is a strong gust of wind, especially in hot weather, the warm air near the ground rises, creating an upward current.

This can catch the underside of an umbrella, causing it to lift into the air, especially if the umbrella is light and not secured.
