Storyline: Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians are returning to their neighborhoods in the Gaza Strip, only to find themselves desperately scouring the ruins for their relatives and loved ones, hoping to recover their remains from beneath the rubble. With the continued success of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas, Palestinian civil defense teams are expanding their efforts to search for the bodies of the missing dead along with the families of the Palestinian victims. Amir, one of the Palestinians whose extended family homes were bombed by the Israeli army, killing 73 of them, told China Global Television Network (CGTN) that he is still trying daily to reach the bodies of his relatives who were trapped under the rubble in the Al-Zeitoun neighborhood east of Gaza City. Palestinian Civil Defense crews announced that they succeeded this week in recovering the bodies of 20 other Palestinians who were trapped under the rubble of their homes, bringing the number of bodies recovered since the ceasefire began last month in the Gaza Strip to 488 Palestinians. Ahmed, a Palestinian whose extended family numbered around 100 people, lost the majority of his relatives in a devastating Israeli bombardment of their residential neighborhood in the Al-Sabra area of Gaza City. At least 2,840 bodies were melted and there are no traces of them, said Mahmoud Basal. The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement in Gaza came into effect on January 19, after more than 15 months of deadly strikes. The Gaza deal includes a 42-day initial phase of truce, during which a total of 33 hostages and hundreds of Palestinians held in Israeli jails are to be released.
