This is the heartwarming moment an elephant calf was reunited with its family at the Oregon Zoo.

The calf, born on February 1 at 4:29 pm, is the offspring of 30-year-old Asian elephant Rose-Tu, following a 20-month pregnancy.

The 42-year-old matriarch, Shine, met the newborn on Wednesday afternoon, February 5.

Footage shows the trio sharing a tender moment, trumpeting and touching trunks as they roam in their enclosure.

Steve Lefave, head of the zoo's elephant programme, said: 'Each new member is important to the herd. Shine will be an aunt and mentor to this baby, and it's wonderful to see them bonding already.'

With all elephants playing a role in the calf's care, the zoo staff is excited to witness the growth of this new family dynamic.

As their bond strengthens, the baby jumbo is expected to meet the rest of the herd in the coming weeks.

While the zoo waits for the first check-up, early signs indicate that Rose-Tu's nurturing and protective nature ensures a strong bond with her baby.

Asian elephants are endangered, with an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 remaining in the wild.

The Oregon Zoo's elephant programme has been dedicated to their care and conservation for over 60 years.
