Angler catches huge 6.5ft fish using tiny rod in kayak
This is the incredible moment a determined angler caught a huge 6.5ft fish using a tiny rod in a kayak.
Edmar Oliveira reeled in the fish in the Madeira River, near Porto Velho, in the state of Rondonia, in north-western Brazil, on Friday, January 31.
Footage shows the fisherman sitting in his boat, line cast, as he tilts it upwards to bring his catch to the surface.
He is stunned when a massive creature, reportedly measuring nearly 6.5ft (2m) and weighing around 132 lbs (60 kg), starts thrashing as it is almost completely hauled out of the water.
The fish, identified as an Arapaima gigas, also known as a pirarucu, splashes back into the water without breaking the line as the video clip ends.
Edmar said the experience was thrilling.
He added: 'The strength of the pirarucu is indescribable! An exciting battle, full of determination and adrenaline.
'Those who have experienced it know, and those who haven't need to experience it! Come and fish for this legend!'
Edmar confirmed that they eventually managed to haul it onto one of their kayaks, calling it the largest specimen of Arapaima that he and his friends had caught that day.
The Arapaima is found in the Amazon River and other bodies of water in the region. It is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world and one of the most ancient, with fossils dating back 13 million years.
It is carnivorous and has tough, armour-like scales that protect it from piranhas.
