Switzerland: Chinese ambassador to WTO on U.S. unilateral tariffs
Geneva, Switzerland - February 18, 2025 Chinese ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) Li Chenggang expressed his grave concerns about the adverse impact of unilateral tariffs imposed by the United States at a meeting in Geneva on Tuesday. At the first WTO General Council meeting of 2025, Li asked the U.S. to remove those tariffs and called on WTO members to safeguard the rule-based multilateral trade system, which resonated among participants. Li said that the U.S. has unilaterally and arbitrarily imposed or threatened to impose tariffs on its trading partners, disturbing global trade and exacerbating economic uncertainties. This may even subvert the rule-based multilateral trade system, and China firmly opposes it and has urged the U.S. to stop these wrong doings, he said. Representatives from more than 30 WTO members, including the European Union (EU), Canada, Brazil, and Russia also expressed concerns over the U.S. unilateralism. The EU representative said that multilateral trade system is currently "under attack" and the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum tariffs and "counter tariffs" are steps in the wrong direction. These actions are illegal and economically detrimental, the EU representative said. Shotlist: Geneva, Switzerland - Feb 18, 2025: 1.
