Vietnamese fishing boat rams navy vessel in Thai waters
This is the shocking moment an illegal Vietnamese fishing boat rammed a Thai navy vessel.
The Vietnamese ship and nine other ships were detected illegally trawling in Thai waters on February 22. They reportedly fished at night before retreating southward during daytime to evade arrest.
Royal Thai Navy (RTN) deployed patrol vessels and aircraft to the area after receiving a request for reinforcements from the First Naval Area Command.
Dramatic footage shows the RTN's HTMS Thepha pursuing the illegal boat racing across the ocean on February 24.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the Vietnamese boat veered toward the navy vessel and slammed into its side.
Navy officers had to fire warning shots from an M16 rifle to make the Vietnamese crew surrender, in accordance with international protocols.
Four fishermen were arrested and will face legal action. Their boat was towed to a multi-purpose vessel in Klang province.
Vice Admiral Arpa Chapanon, commander of the First Naval Area Command, said: 'This is the first such capture in 2025 within the First Naval Area, and we will take decisive action. The Navy will formally notify the Thai government and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the issue with the Vietnamese government.'
He added that the navy will enforce stricter measures amid repeated incursions by Vietnamese fishing boats.
In January, another Vietnamese fishing vessel was captured after a high-speed chase in Thai waters.
The one-tonne boat was reportedly dredging sea cucumbers in the Second Naval Area Command, some 50 miles off the coast of Songkhla province, on January 13.
Local anglers reported to authorities after spotting the foreign vessel lurking in the area.
The Royal Thai Navy's HTMS Pattani and a patrol aircraft were dispatched to chase the boat across the Gulf of Thailand.
The HTMS Pattani was later able to block its path, and the five Vietnamese crewmen were arrested.
