Ten Thai cargo ship crew members were rescued when their vessel sank in Cambodian waters on Sunday.

The Chiang Lan cargo ship was transporting containers from Thailand when it was battered by strong wind and waves near Koh Rong island in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, on June 9 afternoon.

Boat captain Sophon Wanthong, 63, issued a distress message to the First Naval Area Command, which coodinated with Cambodian authorities to conduct the rescue.

The crew were transported to Sihanoukville on a speedboat operated by Sihanoukville volunteers. They were given first aid and health checks by medics upon arriving.

Cambodia's National Committee for Maritime Security said in a news release: 'All 10 Thai crew members were swiftly and effectively rescued by a nearby fishing boat, demonstrating the robust safety measures in place.'

Thai media reported that the crew were staying at a hotel near Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. The Thai Embassy in Cambodia was coordinating with the General Department of Immigration as the sinking had destroyed the men's documents.

The cause of the sinking was under investigation.
