Six tourists were injured when their speedboat caught fire in Indonesia.

The passengers - seven foreigners and four Indonesians - were onboard the speedboat named Suraimbon to visit Wayag Island in the Raja Ampat Regency on February 19.

However, the boat engine exploded as they were nearing the island.

The fire rapidly spread through the vessel, prompting the tourists to plunge into the sea. Locals who witnessed the explosion rushed over to rescue them.

Footage shows several villagers on boats dousing the burning boat.

AKBP I Gusti Gede Raka Mertayasa, local police chief, said the speedboat belonged to the Homestay Terima Kasih hotel.

He said: 'The number of passengers was 11 people, consisting of five foreign nationals and four Indonesian tourists. The Suraimbon speedboat is taking a tourist trip to Wayag Island.

'Seeing the increasingly large flames, the speedboat passengers immediately jumped into the water and were saved by local residents who witnessed the incident.'

Five foreign tourists identified in local reports as Gilbert Jhosua Lewerissa, Zsofia Debreczeni, Atanas Dimitrov Lesichkov, Svetlana Ivanona, and Zolton Boros, were rushed to the Raja Ampat Regional Hospital. One Indonesian national, Putu Eka Astrid Adnyani, was also treated for burns.
