STORYLINE:
China's national "two sessions," a key political event shaping the country's policy direction, are set to convene in Beijing next week against the backdrop of a complex and challenging domestic and global environment.
The annual session of the top political advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, will commence on Tuesday. The session of the top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), will open on Wednesday.
The "two sessions" serve as a critical window to observe China's development plan for the coming year.
Some overseas observers have shared their expectations for this year's "two sessions."
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): AL MAMUN MRIDHA, Secretary general of Bangladesh China Chamber of Commerce and Industry
"The whole world actually are eager to know what policies China is coming up this year.
From our side, we believe China will keep pursuing for global peace, for sustainable development. And they will keep pursuing their technological advancements and keep it open for the world to use.
We want to see more cooperation in different fields of economy, different fields for development, different fields for the joint growth of the human race, (which is) what China has been doing for the last many decades."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): YASIRU RANARAJA, Founding director of the Belt and Road Initiative Sri Lanka
"What I see would be focused this time especially on the new technologies and high-quality development of China, especially the recent news which was there regarding AI models which were developed in China and shocked the world with the efficiency and innovation.
I think China would focus more on how to enhance the innovation, how they can innovate and bring new models or solutions to the world."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): BENJAMIN MGANA, Chief Editor of Foreign News of The Guardian, Tanzania
"This year, I am particularly focusing on several key issues in China's 'two sessions,' including high-quality development, innovation-driven growth, green transformation, common prosperity, and global cooperation.
Given China's position as the world's second-largest economy, decisions made during the 'two sessions' often have far-reaching implications worldwide."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing.
