The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) drilled into the Moon's surface for thermal exploration.

After Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost 1 spacecraft, designed to send payloads to the Moon, landed on March 2, NASA's Lunar Instrumentation for Subsurface Thermal Exploration with Rapidity (LISTER) tool began drilling into the surface to measure the heat flow from the Moon's interior.

LISTER, developed by Texas Tech University in Lubbock and Honeybee Robotics in California, has a drill three metres deep into the Moon's surface.

Every half metre, it measures the heat of the soil. These measurements will help scientists understand how the Moon cooled over time.

Authorities said that if LISTER succeeds, it could help develop improved drilling tools for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and other planets.

This mission is part of NASA's plan to bring more technology to the Moon, with Blue Ghost 1 carrying 10 tools.

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Centre in Alabama is helping manage the project, which could support the future goal of humans living and working on the Moon.
