On March 9, visitors at Chengdu Zoo spotted an unusually overweight black panther, its belly nearly touching the ground and walking with difficulty. This sight raised concerns about the animal’s health.

In response, the zoo clarified that the panther's weight gain was not due to illness or limited space but rather an overabundance of food, leading to excessive nutrition. They also claimed that the panther was in good health.

The zoo also noted that the panther is 16 years old, considered elderly for its species, which contributes to a slower metabolism and increased likelihood of weight gain.

To ensure its well-being, Chengdu Zoo has implemented a weight-loss plan, including dietary control and increased physical activity.
