Unique Burgh Island Sea Tractor Ferry Takes Guests To Famous Art Deco Hotel Off The Devon Coast
The unique Burgh Island sea tractor ferry that ferries guests and staff to and from the island off the South Devon coast in England.
Located half a mile off the coast the ferry is needed to move the guests as the island is cut off twice a day by the tides.
Burgh Island sea tractor, a third-generation hydraulic Sea Tractor, affectionately known as ‘Trundle'.
Originally built as a pioneering way to get to the island from the shore. The tractor has been a part of Burgh Island since the 70s.
The iconic vehicle of Burgh Island has become a beloved sight along the coast.
Used almost daily and is sent across the waves when the tide is in to collect the Burgh Island guests and ferry to the Art Deco hotel.
The Burgh Island sea tractor was originally designed in 1969 by Robert Jackson CBE (a pioneer of the nuclear power station programme in the ’50s) and is the only one of her kind in the world!
In exchange for his work, he was paid with a case of champagne.
Costing around £9,000 to build the first one and the current one the third version is still certainly a Burgh Island celebrity.
Sea tractor can brave the waves when the tide in. But there are times when it is just too rough to be used safely. At low tide the hotel four-wheeled drive vehicles ferry staff and guests.
While the Burgh Island sea tractor is largely reserved for hotel guests, non-guests can rely on her services to transport them to and from the island’s restaurants, dining rooms and pub.
However, this does require a £2 fee each way.
