A 4.2 magnitude earthquake in China rattled buildings in the capital Beijing in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The quake struck the county of Yongqing in Langfang City, Hebei province at 1:21am local time.

Monitors from the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) recorded the epicenter some 13km from Beijing, where terrified residents felt the buildings wobble and received an earthquake early warning alert.

The quake hit at a depth of 20 km, the agency found. Residents said the tremors were felt in the districts of Daxing, Fengtai, Tongzhou and Haidian.

There were no injuries reported but technicians were dispatched across the city to ensure infrastructure was working before the morning rush hour.
