Two German tourists were injured when their car crashed into a building in Thailand.

Driver Moritz Harald Hick, 24, and passenger Anton Augsten, 24, were on a high-speed joyride when their BMW sedan lost control on the island of Phuket.

Dramatic CCTV footage shows the luxury vehicle hurtling onto an intersection in the early hours of March 22. It ploughed through the median strip and flew through the air before smashing into an electric post and two parked pickup trucks.

Police and medics arrived at the scene after receiving a report at around 4 am. They found the blue sedan lying on top of an overturned pickup truck.

Both injured Germans climbed unaided from the wreckage and were taken to the Chalong Hospital for treatment for mild injuries.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Prasit Ra-ob of the Chalong Police Station said: 'We have requested a tow truck to impound the damaged vehicles at the police station. After being treated, the tourists will also be summoned to explain the accident. They will face legal action for property damage.'

The once-pristine island of Phuket has been marred by over-tourism as the Thai government implements a visa-free scheme to boost revenue following the barren pandemic years.

The island saw 800,000 foreign visitors last year alone.

However, angry locals claim the push for tourist dollars has attracted crowds of 'low-quality' visitors from Russia, India and Australia. There are also fears that the island has become an enclave of criminal activity, with police unable to control street fights and more organised ruffians setting up rackets among local businesses.

Phuket officials said they are implementing tighter immigration controls and screening processes amid a wave of drug-related crimes and illegal activities on the island.
