On March 28, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing the partial collapse of the iconic Ava Bridge over the Irrawaddy River in Mandalay.

The Ava Bridge (also known as the "Old Sagaing Bridge") was a 16-span simply supported bridge built by British colonizers in 1934, connecting Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, with Sagaing. During World War II, British forces attempted to destroy the bridge while retreating. After Myanmar gained independence in 1954, the bridge was repaired.

For a long time, this colonial-era bridge was the only crossing over the Irrawaddy River, serving as a crucial route from Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, to the vast central inland region.
