Myanmar (Burma): Chinese companies join relief efforts following deadly Myanmar earthquake
Storyline: Chinese companies operating in Myanmar have moved quickly to join the country's relief efforts following a devastating earthquake that has caused heavy casualties and massive damages. A 7.9-magnitude quake rocked Myanmar on Friday, killing over 2,700 people as of Tuesday, with more than 4,500 people injured and over 440 others missing, according to official data. In Sagaing City, one of hardest hit areas in the natural disaster, a large number of buildings have been severely damaged, and power and water supplies there have not been restored, and locals are still facing dire shortage of shelter and supplies. "My house now tilts to the east, and everything inside is damaged. Eating has become quite difficult, and we are also running out of water." said a local resident. "I'm now living at the foot of a mountain after my house completely collapsed. I can only rely on donations to feed myself, and today I received instant noodles, bottled water and snacks," said another affected resident. Michael Dunford, representative and country director of World Food Program (WFP) Myanmar, said the focus of his organization right now is to source and deliver supplies to those in need. To help alleviate the shortage of supplies, Chinese companies operating in the country have provided support for the relief efforts. The Myanmar branch of Sany, China's leading heavy machinery manufacturer, has sent personnel and equipment to the affected areas. The Myanmar branch of the China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) and the China Rural Development Foundation also distributed relief supplies in both Nay Pyi Taw, capital city of Myanmar and Mandalay, the second-largest city in the country. Yingke Myanmar Law Firm, with a team of less than 20 people, is also actively participating in the relief efforts by providing essential supply materials. As Chinese rescue teams, along with international rescue teams from countries such as Malaysia and Singapore, have worked tirelessly to save lives, the branches of Chinese enterprises in Myanmar such as Xugong Group, BYD, and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China are also making continuous efforts to support those affected by the disaster, demonstrating the strong sense of responsibility of Chinese enterprises.
