ELAZIG, TÜRKİYE - APRIL 10, 2025: In the eastern Turkish city of Elazig, two university students have turned a rented house into an unconventional research site—a chicken coop dedicated to the preservation and development of the rare “Sultan” breed of chicken. The young researchers, Huseyin Goksel Karabulut and Cebrail Yalcin, have been working to increase the color variety of this ornamental chicken breed and successfully hatching chicks in new hues as part of their ongoing efforts. The duo aims to introduce this rare and special breed—a legacy of the Ottoman Empire—to the world. The Sultan is a Turkish breed of crested chicken kept for ornamental purposes. Sultans have a great deal of decorative plumage, including large, puffy crests, beards, long tails, and profuse foot feathering. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
