This is the amusing moment a 'toll collector' elephant grabbed freshly harvested sugarcane from passing trucks.

Anan Kemthong witnessed the jumbo waiting for vehicles to pass, then walking in front of them to retrieve sugarcane in Chachoengsao, Thailand, on March 7.

Footage shows the truck stopping to allow the animal to reach the plants with its trunk.

The gentle giant took a few sticks of the harvest and continued walking towards the side of the road to enjoy its collected 'toll fee'.

Elephants are known for their voracious appetite. The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) found need to eat up to 150kg of food per day - the equivalent of 375 tins of baked beans

Conservationists in Thailand say that wild elephants - up to 3,500 of them - have even developed a taste for human food and prefer to rummage through homes and vehicles for snacks, instead of the bland leaves they find in the forest.
