A wild elephant checked passing cars on the road like a toll booth operator.

Footage shows the jumbo that was alone at that time, blocking one lane on the path and approaching the vehicles in Chachoengsao province, Thailand on February 15.

It picked up a sugar cane stalk scattered on the ground and sniffed on another car before turning its back to snack more.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century.
