ESTHER VAN DER MOST, DIRECTOR OF FOUNDATION PLANT AN OLIVE TREE, SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Dutch)LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS - APR. 13: A memorial event was once again held in Leiden, the Netherlands, on Sunday, Apr. 13, to honor Palestinian children killed in Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza. The event, organized by the Dutch group Plant een Olijfboom, took place at Beestenpark Square, where thousands of pairs of children's shoes were laid out to symbolize the young lives lost in Gaza. As part of the commemoration, volunteers read aloud the names and ages of the children killed and distributed brochures to passersby, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Palestinian authorities report that children and women make up over 60% of the casualties from the ongoing attacks. Children under 18 account for 43% of Palestine's population of 5.5 million, with 2.1 million residing in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. The war has impacted children of all ages, from fetuses in their mother's wombs to premature infants in incubators and children under the age of one. The Statistics Bureau reported that 17,954 children have been killed since the start of the war, including 274 infants. Another 876 children under one year of age were also killed. On April 1, UNICEF reported that 322 children were killed and 609 injured since Israel resumed its offensive following its shattering of the ceasefire on March 18. More than 50,900 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
