At Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, Bomani the elephant calf took his first steps outside yesterday alongside his mother, Talia. In their behind-the-scenes habitat, this little bull is already showing signs of strength, curiosity, and confidence. Keepers were thrilled to watch Bomani explore his new surroundings, learning and growing right before their eyes.

To support a smooth transition for both Bomani and the herd, the elephant barn will remain closed temporarily. This gives the group time to bond in a calm, quiet space while adjusting to new routines. Zoo staff will observe the herd closely and let their behavior guide when it’s time to open up more space—and eventually, welcome the public to meet the zoo’s newest star.
