Clever black swan shakes tree branches so babies can feast on falling flower petals in heartwarming scene
On April 20, in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, an adult black swan was seen stretching its neck to shake a tree branch, causing petals to fall into the water for its cygnets to eat.
Li Mingyuan, a professor of ecology at Hebei Normal University, explained that black swans are herbivorous birds. In spring, petals are rich in protein and vitamins. The adult swan’s deliberate act of shaking the branch to drop petals not only ensures the cygnets receive proper nutrition but also teaches them to feed independently—an example of the black swan’s “survival training.”
