The Indian Navy tested a guided missile destroyer following the Kashmir attack on Tuesday.

Authorities confirmed the successful test of a medium-range surface-to-air missile, with an approximate range of 70 km, on Thursday, April 24.

The officials said in a statement: 'The Indian Navy's latest indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Surat has successfully carried out a precision cooperative engagement of a sea-skimming target, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the Navy's defence capabilities.

'This achievement demonstrates India's growing prowess in indigenous warship design, development, and operations, and underscores the nation's commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.'

At least 26 people were killed, and more than 20 others were injured on Tuesday following the terror attack that triggered a mass shutdown in the region.

The shots reportedly targeted a group of tourists visiting a well-known hill station.

Authorities said the casualties included two foreign nationals and two locals. This marks the deadliest civilian-targeted attack in the region since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. Intelligence sources suggest the assailants may have crossed over from Kishtwar via Kokernag to execute the planned strike.

The incident occurred during the visit of US Vice President JD Vance to India, who described it as a 'devastating terrorist attack'.

Vance said: 'Usha and I extend our condolences to the victims of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India. Over the past few days, we have been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack.'

Security forces have launched an extensive search operation to apprehend the attackers.

India has already announced the closure of the border with Pakistan, the downgrading of diplomatic ties, and the suspension of a key water-sharing treaty.

India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, announced on Tuesday evening that no Pakistani nationals would be allowed entry under a special visa program and instructed those holding such visas in India to leave within 48 hours.
