WIDE SHOT OF DEMONSTRATORS TEL AVIV, ISRAEL -APRIL 24: The civil society organization “Standing Together”, founded by Israeli and Arab activists, has launched a campaign displaying photos of Palestinian children killed in Israeli airstrikes on advertising billboards across Tel Aviv, despite warnings from Israeli police. Earlier this week, the group announced it had received a police directive prohibiting the display of such images during protests. In defiance, the activists used donated funds to rent billboards, drawing widespread attention in Israel. On Thursday, April 24, Standing Together organized a demonstration at Tel Aviv’s Habima Square, where thousands gathered holding photos of the children. The billboard campaign and protest aim to highlight the human cost of the war in Gaza amid what activists describe as increasing government censorship. Alon-Lee Green, an Israeli co-director of Standing Together, stated that their movement seeks to end the occupation, war, and violence to achieve equality and peace. He criticized the erosion of democratic freedoms in Israel, which he said has worsened since the start of the Gaza offensive. Green explained that for the past 18 months, police have systematically denied them protest permits. He added that Palestinian citizens of Israel risk arrest merely for sharing content online about Palestinian children in Gaza. According to Green, authorities had explicitly warned them against displaying images of Gaza’s child victims or using terms like genocide during their rally. Roula Daoud, the Palestinian co-director of the group, emphasized the importance of breaking the silence around Gaza’s casualties, stating that they refuse to let these deaths be ignored. Standing Together, a grassroots movement advocating for Jewish-Arab solidarity, has faced increasing restrictions since the war began. Their latest campaign has sparked both support and backlash within Israel, reflecting deep divisions over the conflict. Writing by Sibel Uygun
