Dogs rescued from a Korean meat factory have been given a new life in the United States.

The seven pooches, survivors of a wildfire that destroyed a dog meat farm in Andong, Gyeongbuk Province, were flown to safety across the Pacific Ocean.

An estimated 700 dogs died in the blaze, while the surviving animals endured trauma and burn injuries. Eight dogs initially escaped, but one later died from her wounds.

The rescue was carried out by Lucy's Friends, an animal welfare group that stepped in after the farm's operator fled during the fire.

The mission is being coordinated by Humane World for Animals South Korea, formerly Humane Society International, which has been advocating for the end of the dog meat industry in South Korea.

A nationwide ban is scheduled to take effect in 2027.

Sangkyung Lee, campaign manager at the organisation, said the team was relieved the seven canines survived and would now receive care in the U.S.

The animals will be treated at a care and rehabilitation centre in Maryland, where they will receive veterinary attention and behavioural support before being placed for adoption.

The fire was one of several wildfires that have affected South Korea since March, described as the country's most severe wildfire season. The blazes have caused widespread damage, displaced tens of thousands of people, and resulted in at least 28 deaths.
