A runaway kangaroo shut down a highway by hopping along a busy road in Alabama.

The marsupial, named Sheila, was seen bounding along the roadside of Interstate 85 in Macon County on April 29.

The unexpected appearance of the female roo reportedly led to a two-vehicle crash, prompting a temporary closure of the highway. No injuries were reported.

Wildlife officers later recaptured Sheila using a tranquiliser dart and transported her to Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine for treatment.

Police said the animal had escaped from her enclosure at Choctafuala Ranch, owned by Patrick Starr.

Experts warned that kangaroos, which can reach speeds of up to 43 mph and exhibit unpredictable behaviour, pose serious risks in populated areas.
