Footage shows a dust storm engulfing buildings in Chicago, Illinois, on Friday, May 16.

The National Weather Service reported that winds of up to 60 mph were whipping up dry soil from fields which have been hit by a lack of rainfall.

The dust storm reduced visibility to under 500ft, causing a number of traffic accidents.

Officials issued alerts about the dust in central Illinois and western Indiana on Friday evening.

They said it was part of a storm system that created tornadoes across Illinois and neighbouring states.
