Storyline: China's brain-computer interface market to top 500 mln USD this year [Voice_over] Brain-computer interface technology is advancing rapidly in China with a broad range of application scenarios. At its core, BCI technology allows people to control an external device or system with just their thoughts. In east China's Jinan City, researchers at a tech company are testing the BCI technology. With a brain computer interface headgear, a patient can control an exoskeleton suit with his thoughts, enabling basic movements like walking and lifting his legs. [Sound_bite] Wang Shengzhe, Engineer, Brain-computer Interface Research Center, Shandong Zhongke Advanced Technology Company Limited: "With the electrode pads and an EEG cap, we can extract the faint neural signals out of the user's brain. And then, our self-developed neural signal amplifier will amplify the signals and feed them into a software. After decoding the signals through algorithm, we will be able to know what the user is thinking and help him in the following treatments." [Voice_over] Although fully decoding the brain's intricate electrical activities remains a significant challenge for companies in the industry, practical use cases are growing for BCI technology. In southwest China's Chengdu City, surgeons at West China Hospital are using it to remove a patient's brain tumors. [Sound_bite] Yang Yuan, Associate chief physician, neurosurgery department, West China Hospital, Sichuan University: "With the help of BCI technology, we can decode neural signals and then distinguish tumors from healthy neurons based on the differences in their electrical activity. This will help us determine tumor margins and we will be able to remove the tumors as completely as possible." [Voice_over] In 2024, China's BCI market was valued at about 440 million U.S. dollars.
