Bungling American paraglider causes power outage when he crashes into electrical cables
A bungling American paraglider triggered a power outage when he crashed into an electricity pole in Thailand.
Michael Travis Langhart, 55, from Louisiana, was left dangling upside down on power cables while trying to land on a beach on the island of Koh Lan near Pattaya on January 12.
Shocked onlookers called for help as he hung more than 33ft above the ground, crying out for help as his parachute lines were entangled in live electrical wires.
Footage shows Michael suspended in the air, his legs caught on the power cables, while gesturing with his hands to communicate with the locals below him.
Rescue teams rushed to Tawaen Beach at 2:30 pm local time. They cut off the electricity first, triggering a blackout across the island, before spending an hour collecting the injured paraglider.
They said he suffered abrasions and burn wounds from being electrocuted.
Michael was rushed to Koh Lan Hospital for emergency treatment and was later transferred to Pattaya City for further care.
Officials said he is a licensed paragliding pilot registered with the Royal Aeronautic Sports Association of Thailand.
He had launched from a mountain on Koh Lan island, intending to glide down to Tawaen Beach before losing control mid-flight.
