MONITOR SHOWING MISSILE IN AIR(FILE VIDEO) SOUTH KOREA (RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2027) (GERMANY (RELEASED ON MAY 29, 2017): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday, May 28, as Germany announced a new €5 billion military aid package and increased pressure on Russia to engage in peace negotiations. During a joint press conference, Chancellor Merz stated that Berlin would intensify diplomatic efforts to push Moscow toward peace talks, warning of further sanctions if Russia refuses to negotiate. "We stand firmly with Ukraine, both in defense and diplomacy," Merz said. The latest military assistance includes support for Ukraine’s domestic production of long-range missiles, with a significant portion expected to be completed by the end of 2024. However, Merz did not confirm whether Germany would supply Taurus cruise missiles, a key request from Kyiv. Germany, Ukraine’s second-largest military supporter after the U.S., has been cautious about providing long-range weapons to avoid direct escalation. Former Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously resisted sending Taurus missiles, citing concerns over Germany’s potential involvement in the conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned against Western arms deliveries to Ukraine, particularly long-range systems capable of striking deep into Russian territory.
