The students set up tents under the “Newton tree” at Trinity College, which is descended from the tree that bore the apple that fell on the head of the scientist Isaac Newton, who discovered gravity. In response, the college administration surrounded the tree with wooden panels and a tarpaulin-covered barricade, both to block the protest area from view and to demand an end to the demonstration. Following this, the students dismantled their tents and continued their protest by setting them up again at St John’s College. Last month, King's College in Cambridge has become the first Oxbridge institution in the UK to commit to completely divesting millions of pounds from the arms industry and companies involved in Palestine's illegal occupation by the end of the calendar year. Almost a year of sustained campaigning has been going on from the student activist groups, alongside the broader Palestinian solidarity movements. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
