High school student, 17, crochets her own junior prom dress
A 17-year-old high school student turned heads after she hand crocheted her own junior prom dress.
Jariatu Jah, from Woodbridge, Virginia, spent every evening for a month crafting the floor-length Beyoncé inspired gown.
Now, she plans to start a fashion business and design another dress for her senior prom.
The base of the orange dress was topped off with a shimmering sequin overlay - which she also made herself.
And she finished her look with a striking gold crown inspired by Beyoncé's iconic sun headgear from the Renaissance World Tour - which she bought.
Jariatu attended the event at Potomac Senior High School with her prom date, Tyrese Jeremiah, 18, also from Woodbridge.
And while he looked dapper - as did all the students - her artistry stole the show.
"I was talking to my fashion teacher and she told me, ‘Hey, maybe you should post that online.' "
"I was just like, I'm not sure — I didn't think it was that big of a deal."
Jariatu decided to share her work on TikTok. The response was immediate and overwhelming.
"When I finished it up and I finally posted it on TikTok, so many people saw the video and people were coming up to me, asking me so much about my dress," she said. "
"I did not expect that video to go viral."
The video quickly racked up thousands of views and comments, with admirers from around the world praising her creativity and skill.
"I definitely want to go to a fashion school and I'm actually starting a business trying to make crocheted dresses, so I'm going to start that up," she shared."
Her story has inspired classmates and social media followers, many of whom have reached out for advice and custom dress requests.
And she is just getting started. With her sights set on senior prom next year, she's already planning her next show-stopping creation.
Reflecting on her whirlwind journey from late-night crocheting to viral fame, she remains humble and excited for what's next.
She said: "For my senior prom, I'm going to make another one."
