Ahmedabad, Gujarat: In the aftermath of the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171, authorities have begun the painstaking process of identifying victims through DNA testing.

At BJ Medical College’s Kasoti Bhavan, relatives of those aboard the ill-fated flight are providing blood samples for DNA matching. These samples are being sent to the forensic laboratory in Gandhinagar to help establish the identities of those who perished.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London Gatwick with 242 people on board, crashed just minutes after take-off from Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing many and leaving only a handful of survivors.

With the wreckage badly charred and many victims unrecognisable, DNA analysis has become critical to confirming identities. Grieving families gathered at the medical college, clutching documents and photographs, as medical teams collected samples and offered support.

Officials say the identification process may take several days, depending on the condition of the remains and the availability of matching DNA from relatives.
